Imploding in on itself like a dying star

Some more stuff completely unrelated to my film, or my journal as it happens. I was watching Destroyed in Seconds which is basically Michael Bay but without the terrible actors and frivolous plot line and all the explosions anyone could ever ask for.

So I tried something more sustained, and I think it turned out all right. I'll likely clean it up and make it smell nice for portfolio time, but for now i'll leave it as such. I seem to have a thing right now for one point perspective. Technically this could be two point, but lets just say its one point for now.

WIP

I don't feel like finishing it. But here you go.

Theme of this week: Stuff in my Journal that should be painted.

Beginning of Week 3 -- Some paintings.

time: 4-5 hours;
time: 5-6 hours
time each: 1 1/2 - 2 hours;
time: 20-45 minutes

Some character concept paintings, and story development paintings. Been busy -- back to the grind, I suppose.

I'm pretty sick, but hopefully it won't hinder my film or my portfolio. Go Lei go.

So First Day of School -- I has made progress.

So this is the very first digital painting I did this summer, albeit I didn't finish it, but here it is.



And this is the one I finished a couple nights ago, as the last digital painting of the summer. Progress. I made it. I will continue on my quest to be a better painter, but I think it'll go on the backburner of my film. However, I will have a chance to make some epic painted layouts for Red Wolfe. So stay put and check it out when I post some more art from my film.

Speed Painting -- 1 Hour or so

So Photoshop crashed like 9 times when I was doing this, so it was originally going to be a lot longer and a lot more refined but I lost my patience.

So have a mostly blocked in, refined face, painting. :)

P.S. my room is still a chaotic mess. I have not started.


Also - out of interest's sake; I decided to post me some premises that I've either worked on or are in the process of refining:

Red Wolfe:

An up and coming jazz singer has a rather odd run-in with a veteran of the vaudeville strip before her first show.

You've seen this one before. To be honest, it's the only one that's working right now and yes, I have changed it a smidgeon since I first updated. I hope it works. Lemme know what you think!

Flight:

A group of fugitives are pursued as they attempt flight from a fortress of a capital city on the stolen prototype airship, the Valkyrie.

Lol. Andrew and I were brainstorming a premise for Flight, and inevitably it went pretty far downhill. I won't even post the silly ones, but I'd love some suggestions!

Ended up not going out -- Digital Painting Galore

So I started doing this one, but then it failed miserably. I tried to save it, and then it failed some more, so I got mad at it.

Then I was scouring around the internet and I got inspired by Garrett Hanna's work, so I pumped this out instead. It's also completely impertinent to Red Wolfe ,and it's also from Flight, but hey. Not entirely useless, I got practice out of it.

This is Michelle Valdez, she's the doctor and she tries, but often fails. Michelle's half black, but black from Puerto Rico. She also manipulates wind. I tried to show wind. Here she's deflecting projectiles, with her wind powers of great justice.

It's also at full resolution, so the full 1920x1200 because I for whatever reason, didn't resize it. Enjoy the massive resolution or curse your bandwidth.

Digital Painting -- Thorns, the Pilot from Flight

Sup folks. I decided to digital paint a human being finally. I would say for the first time, but to be technical, it would be for the first time successfully.
But in a foolish and brash decision, the character isn't from Red Wolfe, she's from Flight. The project that died.
This is Charity Madeline Rose, or Thorns. She's a pilot, and a badass. Mutated like the other ladies from Flight, she manipulates Fire, well at that, but she can't do anything flashy like turn back time or throw icebergs. Lighting her own cigarettes or your hair ablaze is her cup of tea.

I don't know, I think it turned out all right.

Actually I just noticed that her bangs get in the way of her eyebrows so it looks like she burnt them off accidentally or something. A problem I'll solve eventually. Live and Learn.

Another Speed Painting - about an hour and 15

I should really design the Valkyrie (the airship) before I do paintings of it.

But here's one, it was supposed to be under an hour but then I just started messing it up, so I just threw it all together.

Failures are just as important as successes. So basically: "If at first you don't succeed, redefine what you did as success."


Also -- be prepared to see about a painting a day from me. I'm determined to get good at this. That and I have a bit of time to spare, being ahead and stuff on Red Wolfe.

Speed Painting -- 50 minutes

I attempted a speed painting, and I think it turned out passably. It's from Flight.
The colours got a little weird, but I gave it a go and this is my first attempts at something under an hour.

The thumbnail actually does it great justice.

Art Dump - July 28, 2009

This is actually just a bunch of drawings, doodles, almost-digital paintings that I did in the last week or so.

Before the summer started I got all foolhardy, and decided to do a leica reel with a few friends. Let's just say I didn't get to it. But I'm still doing some concept work for it, hence the following drawings.






This next diddly is from "Red Wolfe", my fourth year film. I'm not gonna post a lot of stuff from it, but here's a bit. :) It's a by-law now that if a non-smoker asks you to stop smoking, you have to, but back in the 1920s on the vaudeville strip? Not so much.

Red Wolfe is an adaption of Little Red Riding and Chicago, which are polar opposites in terms of content but have similar themes. For those who didn't read this on my old blog:
