Atlas In Progress

About 10-15 minutes each.

A work in progress. The atlas'll eventually be massive, but this is as far as I got this weekend -- and then I just went out and spent money and ate food and played video games instead.

Playing Around

? I was experimenting. I recently purchased The Beginner's Guide to Digital Painting, and I was playing with a few suggestions from in there.

Otherwise, I have no idea what I'm doing.

I wasn't sure what to draw, so I doodled this instead. It kind of blows, but w/e. it's decent practice. I'm not even linking this on facebook, just twitter. haha.

West Side Story

I've had "America" embedded in my head since I saw Glee last tuesday. Also I like West Side Story anyway, so this isn't a case of, Oh the Glee version of this song is so much better THE DEAD VERSION OF YOU IS SO MUCH BETTER

I actually like West Side Story. Long story, I could have probably auditioned for it in Grade 12 at my high school, but I ended up boycotting the theatre after a debacle I encountered the year prior. Too bad. I might go into community theatre sometime. I would be an awesome Maria - being a soprano of the untrained nature.

This poster is kind of like if Jamie Metzger's Paso Doble met West Side Story. Also I fully realize that Anita is not the main character, but like I said, I have America embedded in my head.

Enjoy something that actually has nothing to do with anything else I post.

yup. I did it to relax, and honestly didn't really care how it turned out. She turned out a little asian looking though. oh well.

Something quick

time: 2.5-3 hours; Medium: Photoshop CS5 with those new tilty brushes.

Today I got CS5 - totally legit. And i whipped this up - it was about 2-3 hours on and off. And I have to say --

CS5's new brushes, that change depending on how you hold your brush are outstanding and it makes me feel like I'm painting again. and I love it. I'm just going to paint tons of portraits over and over and over and over again - until my head explodes.

Drawing High?

Ok, so I was feeling really under the weather today, but I digress a lot of energy is NOT spend doodling in your sketchbook. If you're wondering what I mean by drawing high, I suppose some of you production folk might not get it, which is fine, but I have this thing about drawing -- meaning, I love it, I love it more than animating which is probably why I dropped it like it was hot. Sometimes I get inspired by music and I just need to draw, and it always comes at the worst time, like, 12:30. And I just have to draw until I don't feel like it anymore, or the drawings get so bad that I need to stop to save myself the embarassment.

The following pages started at about 12:30, and ended at around 2:30. It's pretty funny going from the first to the last image, watching how they get progressively worseI was cranking my favourite glee renditions, including Funny Girl, Rose's Turn, Faithfully and Four Minutes. All of which are musical crack. They're done with Nobel and Staedler lead holders, 2H and sometimes 2B. Yes, I tend not to draw men of my own accord.

Rose's Turn is amazing.

Also, I'm craving some life drawing that's hella easier access than what I have access to right now.

Also, again, 5 days until my cintiq gets here. And when it does....

Simple. Because I didn't want to. :) This one took a bit longer, for obvious reasons. It's not as successful I Think.

So like, I learned a very important lesson here. Make sure you turn off aspect ratio correction. Because I totally painted with it on, and then I had a very square painting which didn't make for a very pretty sight. But it was fixable.

Also my tablet is on its way to tablet graveyard. But I hope it'll last until the cintiq gets here.

RED WOLFE poster -- inspired by Star Trek

I know, Red Wolfe is in the 20s, Star Trek is in space no relation.

I like the poster though for the movie, and I just did this on a whim and with some foresight, recorded it. It's not layout, but it's fancy.

If you don't feel like watching the process -- here's the final. Total time: 47 minutes.

Yeah I know, I'm totally humping the line when it comes to Wolfe's gender in terms of her appearance -- as Julia so delicately put it. This is the most feminine she gets in her tux, though. Her lighting isn't as exact as I'd want it to be, but this was just a wing-it kind of painting. I might revisit it.

Here's the one I did of Red -- she was a lot easier this painting came in at 24 minutes, just about.

Overall the contrast is better in this one, but the detailing is better in Wolfe -- mostly because I Spent more time on it. I was kindly reminded that I'm running on about 2 hours sleep so I should probably go to bed. I think the most amusing part about doing these is basing them off photos of chiseled men -- and turning them into not chiseled women. Although Wolfe is getting a little close to tranny town, but she's still a woman there.
