Five Second sketches (more like 15)

I was drawing my cat as some research, and aside from loving how cute he was, I think these turned out well.

They were done with a broad flat brush, and dry ink on cue cards (they're very useful, those, you can storyboard on them, paint on them, use them as note keepers, as actual cue cards, turn them into paper airplanes....etc etc)

ART JAM And Portfolio Piece, and now whored out to my blog too.

time: about 6-7 hours, photoshop CS5, and watching Tangled at least three times (at least the Snuggly Duckling sequence).

Not gonna lie, got really into this. This is the piece I made both for a gaming studio portfolio and an art jam that my friends and I are doing. I also realised about a quarter of the way through that it didn't relate to the prompt at all (For the art jam).

Did it anyway, I wanted the piece.

So here's an ancient Aztec Warrior Woman, that sort of thing would have never happened but let's just say it did. She is a little manly, but I guess you have to be when you're whipping around a mahquahuitl, and a tlacochtli.

I know right.

A Walk Through the Forest, when two eyes appeared

Painter and I have become acquaintances, and to be quite frank, Painter's likely the most stubborn program ever. However, after a long talk and a bit of coercing, Painter showed me the ropes and I'm beginning to understand how to use the program properly.

I was working really hard on this, and I got to the point of: "Stop touching it. You're making it worse."

I don't know why I decided this perspective was a great idea, but it turned out to be more trouble than it was worth. I ended up cheating it a bit, but I'm sure a perspective guru would call me out on it. *cough* You know who you are.

Ah well, practice is practice, right?

AHHH I DID IT!

Okay, I'm going to be completely honest and say I probably spent way too much time on this. I was really particular when I was working on it, and I wanted it to be the best it could be - and maybe i over did it, maybe.

i probably did.

As you saw in my previous post, I had much issue deciding what to do with my Christmas card for the Christmas card trade; and needless to say I found a solution. I probably could have kept going but I think capping it off at about the 18-20 hour mark was enough time to spend on a card and it's time to finish getting ready for Christmas itself, and get back onto the freelance train.

BIGGEST RUN-ON SENTENCE EVER. Not ever, but I'm pretty tired.

So here you go! I'll post some smaller thumbnails of process too.

Christmas Card - Trial and Error

Hey guys, I'm sorry - I've been crazy busy! My mother is completely intent on getting ready for Christmas at least three weeks early - which has already failed, so you can imagine the state she's in. Also this was probably a bad time to take on some freelance work since I'm completely consumed with Christmas trimming and baking and other stuff...ing. Get it? I'm hilarious.

Anyway...

Every year I make a Christmas card for my friends, and this year someone suggested the idea of having a Christmas card trade.

In all my brilliance, and leadership skills, I thought - "Hey yea, that'd be brilliant!"

So I led [WOW, I DID NOT NOTICE I WROTE LEADED] the pack out of my friends into doing this massive christmas card trade, but this year we decided to legitimately print them out and mail them to people's houses. Outstanding idea, am i right?

Except for the fact that I sometimes, in cases where I am given full creative control, have the decision making skills of a bottle of 99% USP grade Rubbing Alcohol. I think I need like, a producer of ALL my art to tell me what to do. I have since gone through about three designs, all of them failures or I've thought was a FANTASTIC idea at the time of conception but once it came to execution I realized how silly I was.

So I decided to post the sillies.

In all my big-headedness from my last painting, which turned out quite successful, I decided that I had the skill and ability to take on at least six times that work and finish it in the same amount of time. I was gravely wrong.

There wasn't any MASSIVE issue with this one, aside from the fact that I stopped liking it - and I have no idea how to paint a Christmas tree so I projected that I'd be painting it for the next several days and I have other work that requires my attention...And I'd already spent like 6 hours on it and I said "#($*% this." and moved on... [Also if you note, a good 1/5th of the Christmas tree is just MISSING.]



I have no idea what feeding a stray cat has to do with Christmas. Actually I do, the sentiment is adorable but why Red from Revolt? And why is the cat in the middle of a snowy field? Albeit, I like the design of this, I just began to question my logic, and it wasn't really my cup of tea in the first place.



I was listening to "The Most Wonderful Day of the Year" too much.

I moved on to do an updated version of a card i did several years ago - and I think I'll post the original because it's fantastic in its awfulness. I Did this when I was...14? If you'll take note, the Christmas tree is about four feet tall, but for whatever reason the girl putting up the star needs a boost even though she is entirely capable of doing it on her own. Yes there is a Mr. Bean's Christmas joke in there. No, I don't remember why Beyblade was an integral part of Christmas.

The updated card will house fictional characters this time, instead of poor excuses of caricatures.

The final christmas card I'll wait till after I send it out to folks to post it on here.

Still very sick.

So, I've been sick for a week and a half now - but at least I'm getting better. I'm getting a little sick of it. Har har.

I've been meaning to do something like this for a while now, and since I've been at home for the last week and a half I finally got the chance to do it. I thin kit turned out well. Although as soon as Andrew mentioned that it reminded him of Tron, I liked it a little less. Not that I don't like Tron, don't get me wrong.

Perhaps I gave my colour creativity too much credit.

Something quick

Today I got CS5 - totally legit. And i whipped this up - it was about 2-3 hours on and off. And I have to say --

CS5's new brushes, that change depending on how you hold your brush are outstanding and it makes me feel like I'm painting again. and I love it. I'm just going to paint tons of portraits over and over and over and over again - until my head explodes.

This work has been taking me a year to do. Not because I'm that slow, but because I do work on it, then I walk away from it for a while. I wanted to show you the evolution because it's really interesting -

Little Red Riding Hood - a painting series

Little Red Riding Hood is by far my favourite fairy tale, and I thought in honour of finding all my old visual development work for my fourth year film which was originally based off Little Red Riding Hood -- I would make a series of paintings.

And I'm going to Deserres today, to get some illustration board and I'm going to town on it.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: How to harness it.

I don't officially have OCD, but sometimes I think I do. I've been listening to "Telephone" By Lady Gaga feat. Beyonce for basically...the last two weeks.

In that span of time, I generated these, well not two weeks, about one a day over the span over two weeks. I'll go in order:

Imploding in on itself like a dying star

Some more stuff completely unrelated to my film, or my journal as it happens. I was watching Destroyed in Seconds which is basically Michael Bay but without the terrible actors and frivolous plot line and all the explosions anyone could ever ask for.

So I tried something more sustained, and I think it turned out all right. I'll likely clean it up and make it smell nice for portfolio time, but for now i'll leave it as such. I seem to have a thing right now for one point perspective. Technically this could be two point, but lets just say its one point for now.

So First Day of School -- I has made progress.

So this is the very first digital painting I did this summer, albeit I didn't finish it, but here it is.



And this is the one I finished a couple nights ago, as the last digital painting of the summer. Progress. I made it. I will continue on my quest to be a better painter, but I think it'll go on the backburner of my film. However, I will have a chance to make some epic painted layouts for Red Wolfe. So stay put and check it out when I post some more art from my film.

Something a little more complete

I'm surprised I kept at it that long, considering CS4 is a selfish brat and throws tantrums whenever it gets the chance. But anyway --

I decided to actually devote time to something that was applicable to Red Wolfe, and thus, here's Red in all her glory. I realized that she looks a heck of a lot like Nigella Lawson in how she carries herself. Nigella Lawson being a Food Network TV show host, (Host of Nigella Express) and a very curvaceous woman while being really attractive all at once. Of course, Nigella is not an antagonistic whore.

I also, will never render silk ever again. Considering it doesn't even look like silk; I think that's evidence enough I should stay away from fancy fabric until a later date.

There's something up with Red's chest too, but I got to a point where I realize that the most important points are fine: Her cleavage, and her face. (In that order of importance)

I'm likely going to tweak this and repost it.

I couldn't sleep if I didn't do this. So I did. Happy improvements all around! Holy crap it looks so much better - I need to not only learn Digital Painting, I need to learn me some Digital Patience too. It could still do with some love, but I think this is a happy place to stop -- also it's 2:15 AM, I should go to bed. :)
